GEARS
Gear is the official term for a highly complex machine, and typically just the term "Gear" on its own refers to a physical-space machine capable of self-determinism and sapience that is also largely inextricable from the physical body it inhabits. The most common types of Gears are built by corporations, mainly Jikanplex, and are officially referred to as JikanGears. Similar terminology applies to different types of Gears made by different corporations, for example, the Kos-Summer Group built Gears are called KosGears, ASTRAIOS Space Station Gears are called ASTRA-Gears, etc, etc.
All Gears that exist today are, in some capacity, based on the framework of Jian Kanan, the very first "living machine", created and revealed in 2052 by Jikanplex's late former CEO, Arata Kanan. The KANAN operating system (KANAN_OS) is only used with JikanGears, and was notoriously difficult for other developers to build off of, due in part to the fact that Arata Kanan was known as very reclusive and difficult to work with. The KANAN OS was also coded in a unique coding language Arata Kanan himself invented called QUALIA_L, so for several years, people were completely reliant on Jikanplex (and, more specifically, Arata himself) to give the "spark of life" to any Gears they wanted to create.
As time passed, people became more familiar with the QUALIA_L programming language, improving and modifying it over the years and developing new operating systems based off of the original KANAN_OS. The current main programming languages that most Gears today are based off of is QUALIA_L and its application version, QUALIA_L++, though there are other types, such as PneumaBooks and Gear HEART. During the 2050s, the attempts to create new Gears based on Jian's framework that it led to a surge in technological research for both humans and Gears alike, where cybernetics and machine development increased in complexity at a breakneck pace like nothing ever seen before. This period of time in the mid-to-late 2050s is known as the "Gear Revolution".
Gears tend to fall into one of two lanes of "being"- either being made for a specific purpose that requires higher levels of intelligence, so their identity is mostly crafted prior to being activated, or they're not made for any specific purpose, and are coded with only very general framework for a personality and kept in a curated environment for a short period of time to allow them to fill in the blanks on their own through interacting with hobbies, media, basic tasks, and other people. While Gears made for a specific person are not legally required to remain in the position, most often do for the first few years of their life at minimum, due to the security it grants them. This has unfortunately resulted in many cases of Gear mistreatment over the years, though there are many activist groups and programs attempting to allow "for-purpose" Gears greater opportunities outside of what they were built for.
By law, Gears must contain a certain amount of complexity to their design so that they are able to be easily differentiated from Autogears at a brief glance. Their design also cannot resemble an everyday nonsapient object, such as a car.
DATAGEARS
Datagears are sometimes referred to as "digital ghosts"- personality profiles that exist only as AI on the meshnet rather than possessing physical bodies like a normal Gear. A lot of these can be found in the Mirai Nexus, though they're all interwoven into the meshnet itself. Some Datagears will rent empty bodies known as "shells" in order to interface with the physical world, or can even take over a Gear's body by either the Gear allowing entry, or through malicious takeover. Most Datagears live on the HYLIC Layer of the mesh, and about 60% of all Datagear personality profiles are kept on physical servers in the ASTRAIOS Space Station orbiting the planet. However, some do live in the deeper parts of the net, in the PNEUMATIC Layer, and those ones tend to be... strange.
Datagears can look like anything, or even nothing- some exist only as data, not interacting with the physical world ("fizzyspace") at all. Most Datagears act in deference to the three KAIROS AI, and while many Datagears are New-KAIROS Elefthists, it's very difficult to do studies and calculate exactly what percentage of Datagears lean towards, since its impossible to know how many Datagears even exist.
AUTOGEARS
An Autogear is a machine with a complex design and purpose, but is not sapient or self-deterministic. It cannot develop self-determinism, either, as Autogears are built an entirely different operating system from KANAN_OS and contains no traces of it, which is required for the "spark of life" contained within regular Gears. Things such as cleaning robots, smart fridges, and self-driving cars are Autogears, made intelligently but containing no actual "mind" within. By law, Autogears must have relatively simplistic designs relying on single-colour palettes and shapes, so that they can be easily differentiated from regular Gears.
